Honours were shared in the Madrid derby after Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid drew 1-1. With the home side grinding out results under Fabio Capello and the visitors getting off to their best start in years, there was a great expectation in the stadium. And within six minutes the first goal was on the scoreboard, Maxi heading a long ball from Torres into the path of Mista for him to score against his old club.

Maniche could have increased the lead later in the first half when he shot wide with only the keeper to beat, but soon afterwards Raúl got on the end of a long ball from Guti to drill a low shot past Leo Franco for the equaliser. It was the striker's third goal in five days after a drought of almost a year, and his ninth against what was his old club as well.

Casillas was in action before the break to tip a long shot from Maniche around the post, but Leo Franco had to push an effort from Van Nistelrooy over the bar before the half time whistle. Reyes just failed to get on the end of Guti's cross soon after the restart, and Maxi shot into the side netting as both sides came looking for the advantage.

Madrid were left with ten men though when Sergio Ramos was sent off for a second bookable offence after bringing down Fernando Torres, and Aguirre turned to Agüero for the last half an hour. The move almost worked as the young Argentine striker brought a good save out of Casillas, and then chipped a shot just over the bar in the dying minutes. In the end though fair result, which leaves the hosts in fourth spot and their opponents just a point and a place behind them.
