Valencia moved up to second in the table, just behind Barcelona on goal difference, after beating a battling Gimnàstic 4-0. Morientes turned in David Villa's cross to open the scoring early in the first half, referee Velasco Carballo waving away Nàstic's claims that Villa had picked up the ball in an offside position and eventually showing a red card to their coach Luis César for protesting. But for the rest of the first half the Catalans held their own, and could have scored had Cuéllar's cross not curled past the far post in front of a couple of strikers.

Eight minutes in to the second half though Valencia went two up when Villa connected with Gavilán's set piece free kick to shoot inside the far post, and the Spanish striker could have got another with an inswinging corner which bounced off the bar. Villa did get his second of the night a few minutes later though after a good run by Gavilán left him with an open goal, and Angulo celebrated his call up for Spain with the fourth after Bizzarri had pushed out Edu's lob from Silva's through ball.
