Valencia beat Osasuna 1-0 on Sunday evening to consolidate second spot, level on points with leaders Barcelona. David Villa followed up his Champions League brace with the opening goal on the quarter hour mark, thrashing the ball past Ricardo after Morientes headed back Hugo Viana's cross. The striker could have scored earlier had his own player David Silva not got in the way of his shot, and Viana brought a good save out of Ricardo later in the first half from a free kick. The visitors were causing few problems for Cañizares, and only a couple of long efforts from Raúl García and Valdo gave the keeper any work before the break.

Joaquín hit the bar with a free kick later in the second half, but Quique Flores's side struggled after losing Albelda to an injury, and Osasuna took control of midfield from then on. Valdo almost saved a point for his side when he brought a good save out of Cañizares and then hit the post with a shot from the edge of the area, and Viana cleared a header from Cuéllar off the line following a corner. Valencia were left with ten men for the last few minutes after substitute Jorge López was sent off for a second bookable offence, but they only had to hold on for a couple of minutes more before the final whistle.
