Athletic Bilbao have yet to win at home this season after drawing 0-0 with Racing Santander, a result which left the Basque side just a place above the relegation zone and their opponents three points above them after their fourth away draw in a row.

The game was conditioned by the rigorous sending off of Gabilondo shortly before the break for a foul on Oriol, leaving the Basque side a man short for all the second half. The only real chance up to them had been an effort from Aduriz which Garay had deflected for a corner.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Athletic had the better chances after the restart, with Yeste and Llorente both going close. Both sides had penalty appeals turned down as well after Yeste was brought down by Luis Fernández, and then Zigic was pushed by Ustaritz. But referee Pino Zamorano had already received enough stick for sending off Gabilondo, and he decided to let things be.
