Atlético Madrid missed out on a chance to move up into the Champions League spots after they were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom club Real Sociedad. With the same line up that won their last two games Atlético were in confident mood, Fernando Torres having a shot turned for a corner by the defence, and Galletti heading another effort wide. But the Basque side surprised their opponents midway through the first half, Uranga heading Jesuli's cross wide of Leo Franco to open the scoring.

Visiting keeper Bravo pulled off spectacular saves from free kicks by Antonio López and Pernía either side of half time, and it looked as if Real were in line for their first league victory of the season. A desperate Aguirre threw on Mista and Jurado, but even so they could not find a way past a well ordered defence.

But with twelve minutes to go Galletti put in a speculative cross from the right, and Ansotegui chested the ball past his own keeper under pressure from a couple of forwards. Torres fired a shot over the top after that, and Bravo kept out a last minute effort by Antonio López. But Real settled for a point, which takes them off the bottom, just above Nàstic on goal difference pending their game on Sunday.
