Atlético Madrid moved up to fourth pending Sunday's games after beating struggling Betis 0-1. Javier Aguirre put out the same line up for the third match running, and they came close to scoring early on when Juanito cleared a Fernando Torres header off the line, and then when Contreras tipped a shot from Galletti around the post. Edu headed an Assunçao free kick over the top, but with just over half an hour on the clock Galletti volleyed home the opening goal after Agüero played on Maniche's long pass.

Betis were awarded a penalty six minutes in to the second half when Perea tripped Sobis, but Leo Franco saved Edu's spot kick and then blocked the follow up from Juanito. And a quarter of an hour later referee Undiano Mallenco gave the locals a second chance to equalise when he pointed to the spot after substitute Fernando was pushed by Seitaridis, but once again the Atlético keeper kept out the penalty from Fernando, who headed the rebound wide with the goal at his mercy. A desperate Irureta had brought on forgotten man Dani, but even he couldn't find the target when presented with a late chance. Betis had lost for the third time at home this season, and the coach's job is hanging by a thread.
