Sevilla missed out on a chance to move back to the top of the table after they were beaten 2-1 by Espanyol. Barcelona's draw the night before meant that the Andalusians could have overtaken their rivals in the table, and they took the lead with a Kanouté penalty midway through the first half after Kameni was adjudged to have brought down Adriano. Otherwise though the locals were on top, with Moisés bringing a good save out of Palop in the opening minutes, Riera shooting just wide and Tamudo having a penalty appeal turned down.

Espanyol continued to attack after the break, Luis García and De la Peña both shooting just wide. And Tamudo equalised after leaving two defenders for dead with a clever back-heel before shooting inside Palop's near post. Sevilla's substitute Bruno came close to restoring the lead with a centre come shot which bounced off the woodwork, but Luis García got on the end of De la Peña's cross to make it two a few minutes later. And the home side held on despite having Riera sent off for a high tackle on Alves near the end, taking the Catalans safely up to mid-table.
