With Barcelona's match against Betis postponed due to the Club world Cup, Sevilla took advantage to overtake them in the league with a 1-3 win against neighbours Recreativo. Luis Fabiano gave Juande Ramos's side an early lead from the penalty spot after referee Mejuto González ruled that Merino had fouled Antonio Puerta inside the area, although television pictures suggested that the winger had dived. Recre equalised soon afterwards when Jesús Vázquez headed home Aitor's cross on the far post, but Kanouté re-established the lead before half time after Renato's header came back off the post.

Up to that point the locals had looked the better side, with Palop making a string of saves from all and sundry. But a few minutes after the restart Jesús Navas made it three after picking up a pass through the legs of a defender from Alves. The visitors were left with ten men for the last half hour or so when Aitor Ocio was sent off for a second bookable offence, but although Beto and Javi Guerrero went close, Sevilla held on for a valuable victory.
