A good start for Betis's new coach Luis Fernández after his side beat Celta 1-0 to move within a point of getting out of the relegation spots. Fernández made several changes to the line up, and although the first chance fell to the visitors when Baiano's shot was deflected wide by Rivas, for the rest of the first half they were on top. Only a brilliant reaction save prevented a diving header by Sobis from entering the net, and Marcos Assunçao rattled the crossbar with a long free kick.

Assunçao continued to cause problems with his free kicks after the restart, and with an hour on the clock the Brazilian midfielder fired in a long shot which Pinto could only push into the path of Sobis for him to score. Ten minutes later the visitors were left with ten men after Pablo García was sent off by an overzealous Pérez Lima for a second bookable offence, and it was all over.
