Betis were brought down to Earth after they knocked Real Madrid out of the cup midweek, a 1-1 draw with Racing Santander not enough to take them out of the bottom three. Luis Fernández's side came out of the starting blocks with a vengeance, but despite having most of the possession they couldn't find the path to goal. And the best chances in the first half fell to the visitors, Zigic heading wide with Doblas gone awol and then finding the net only for referee Velasco Carballo to rule it out for what he considered to be a push on Arzu.

Zigic failed to convert a couple more chances after the restart, and Fernando finally tested Toño with a weak shot some twenty minutes from the end. The Cantabrians seemed to have won it though when Doblas clattered in to Munitis, and Garay fired home the resulting penalty with just six minutes left on the clock. Two minutes later though Toño tried to punch clear following a corner, and the ball fell to Xisco who lobbed it back first time into the net from outside of the area to save a point for his side.
