Valencia moved up to third pending Sunday's games after beating Atlético Madrid 3-1 on Saturday evening. Both sides began the match level on points, and they got off to a lively start with Albelda clearing a Pablo header off the line and David Villa firing a free kick over the top. The locals took the lead though when Ayala headed home David Villa's corner with only a quarter of an hour gone, and Villa could have put them further ahead when he shot wide later in the first half.

Nine minutes in to the second half Morientes added a second close to goal after Villa had sent Vicente's away down the left wing. Atlético replied almost immediately, Mista cutting in to drive a low shot wide of Cañizares, the striker refusing to celebrate out of respect for his old fans. But ten minutes later Vicente got free again down the left wing, and crossed in for Morientes to wrap things up with his second of the night. Cañizares limped off after that, still suffering from a collision with team mate Raúl Albiol in the first half, but by then it was all over.
