Valencia move back above Real Madrid to third after a1-1 draw at bottom club Gimnàstic, although they will be disappointed not to win after the locals equalised in injury time. David Villa came close to putting Quique Flores's side ahead in the opening minutes, Bizzarri saving his first effort within the first 30 seconds and the striker chipping another shot over the bar. But the Catalans had the better chances after that, César Navas and Portillo both heading wide of the target and Butelle saving at the feet of Calvo.

Pinilla, celebrating his 36th birthday, went close with a header after the restart. But Flores brought on Morientes and within five minutes his side were ahead, Bizzarri only pushing Villa's shot as far as Joaquín, who scored his first goal since joining the club in the summer, albeit from a possible offside position. Cuéllar hit the bar with a long shot soon afterwards, but with Valencia already celebrating a victory Rubén Castro got on the end of Portillo's cross to head past Butelle and save a point for his side.
