Atlético Madrid drop down to sixth, level now on points with Recreativo who beat them 1-0 in the last match on Sunday. Sinama-Pongolle got the only goal with an early penalty after Zé Castro fouled Uche, and the French striker fired a second spot kick over the bar later in the first half after Seitaridis pushed over Uche again. Sinama left the field soon afterwards though with an injury, and Atlético could have equalised had López Vallejo not kept out a shot from Jurado before half time.

Aguirre decided to go for broke after the restart, gradually replacing three of his back four with more attacking players. Agüero was being constantly baited by the fans, many of whom were wearing gloves in reference to the goal the striker scored with his fist in the first match between the two sides, but he didn't let it affect him and brought another good save out of the keeper, who also stopped an effort from Fernando Torres.

Javi Guerrero missed a late chance to extend the lead, but Torres almost saved a point with an overhead kick against the bar right at the end. Atlético ended with ten men though after Costinha was shown a straight red card, and they are now in danger of losing their European spot to a side who are proving to be the revelation of the league this year.
