Third placed Valencia closed the gap with Barcelona to three points after beating Celta 1-0 on Saturday evening. With a Champions League match coming up midweek, Quique Flores made no less than eight changes, including a first appearance for Del Horno after an injury which has kept him out all season. And his side could have taken the lead in the first half had David Villa not been incorrectly flagged offside when free on goal, and if Angulo had been able to make more of another chance a few minutes later.

Celta though were putting up a good fight, and Cañizares had to be on his toes to keep out Canobbio and Nené soon after the restart. But midway through the second half Morientes got on the end of Hugo Viana's lifted pass to beat Pinto, referee Alvarez Izquierdo waving away that Joaquín had interfered with play from an offside position.

Canobbio and Pablo García both fired free kicks over the top as the visitors fought to get back in the game, and Villa was frustrated again by the linesman after being flagged offside despite being in his own half when the pass was made. Cañizares still had to make a vital last minute save from Baiano's header to ensure the three points, but the game ended seconds later. The defeat leaves Celta just a point away from the drop zone pending Sunday's games.
