Sevilla had a chance to outdistance Barcelona after the Blaugranas' draw against Real Madrid the night before, but once again the Andalusians lost to lower ranked opposition. Gimnàstic started the day 33 points below their rivals, but although Juande Ramos's side dominated for much of the match, the Catalans ran out 1-0 winners. Bizzarri saved a couple of times from Alves and Kanouté headed against the bar and had another strike ruled out for offside shortly before the break, but the Catalans also had their chances, Palop having to be on his toes to keep out Pinilla and Rubén Castro shooting wide.

The first chance of the second half fell to Rubén Castro, who could only shoot at Palop, but after that Sevilla were on top, with Navas, Kanouté, Alves and Chevantón all having efforts scrambled away by Bizzarri and his defence. But Irurzun fired a shot over the top at the other end, and with twenty minutes to go Portillo squeezed between Navarro and Dragutinovic to connect with Calvo's cross and steer a header inside the post. The ex Real Madrid striker could have had a second when he shot wide with only the keeper to beat later on, but that would probably have been too much.
