Real Sociedad moved off the bottom of the table, for 24 hours at least, after beating relegation rivals Levante 1-0 on Saturday evening. The Basque side knew they had to win this match to have any chance of survival, and they got off to a good start, with Savio and Díaz de Cerio both testing Molina with long shots. And seven minutes before the interval, Ansotegi got on the end of Savio's free kick to head what was to be the only goal of the game.

Real were given a helping hand though by Fernández Borbolán, who sent off Riga a few minutes after the restart for a second bookable offence (apparently for wearing a gold chain!) and then also produced a red card for coach Abel Resino for protesting. The referee also turned down a penalty appeal by Tomassi, and ruled out a last minute goal by the Italian midfielder for what he considered to be a deliberate hand ball by Salva. Even so Kapo could have equalised when he fired a shot straight at Bravo, but the locals held on for three points which takes them to within seven of their opponents.
