Real Sociedad kept their slim hopes of survival alive with a 0-1 victory over the exiled Betis in the Cartuja stadium on Saturday evening. It was a dour relegation battle, and there were few chances early on, Robert heading wide and Kovacevic having another header saved at the other end. With just over half an hour gone though the visitors went ahead when Garrido beat Doblas with a long free kick, his first goal for the senior side.

Real are Luis Fernández's bogey team though, the coach not having won against them in ten games, and although he made two changes early in the second half they could not find the way past a well ordered defence. Robert missed two or three chances to equalise later on, but the visitors held on for their first away win of the season. They are now five points away from safety, and Betis find themselves back in the fight to avoid the drop.
