Atlético Madrid moved back level on points with fifth placed Zaragoza after a 1-0 win over Levante. Javier Aguirre left Kun Agüero on the bench to give Costinha and Mista a run out, but both came up against a confident Molina. Galletti almost caught out the keeper with an attempted chip, and Fernando Torres went close soon after the restart, by which time Agüero was on the park.

With an hour on the clock Atlético got the goal they were looking for when Torres curled a shot wide of the keeper from the edge of the area. Abel Resino immediately brought on Riga, and in five minutes he created more chances than all his colleagues had done in the rest of the match.

However the Dutch midfielder could not find the finishing touch, and Salva too failed to steer a header on target on his return to the Vicente Calderón stadium. The defeat leaves Levante down in the bottom three after most of the teams around them won, and they have now gone eight games without a victory.
