Villarreal took advantage of slips by the teams above them to move up level with seventh placed Recreativo thanks to a 1-4 victory at Osasuna, their fourth victory in a row. Pires gave them the early lead with a low shot past Ricardo after Josetxo headed the ball into his path trying to clear José Enrique's cross. Juanfran and Soldado combined to set up Valdo to equalise from close range soon afterwards, and Pires and Raúl García missed chances at either end as the first half ended with honours shared.

Diego Forlán put the visitors back in front though with a spectacular shot midway through the second half. Webó and Valdo both came close to levelling the scores once again, but Forlán put the result beyond the home side's reach with a third goal after playing the ball round Ricarod and outsprinting both the keeper and a defender to run it over the line. And the Uruguayan striker completed his hat-trick in injury time on another quick breakaway, referee Pérez Lima waving away appeals that the game should have been pulled up with Cuéllar lying on the ground after a clash with Guille Franco.
