A disastrous night for Betis and also for their coach Luis Fernández, who was fired soon after his side were thrashed 0-5 by Osasuna. The Andalusians had gone eleven games without a win, but they were hopeful of picking up the points they needed to move clear of the drop zone against a team who had nothing to play for. And they started well, with Assunçao brushing the bar with a free kick in the opening minutes.

However with half an hour on the clock Miguel Flaño dashed their hopes when he headed Puñal's corner past Contreras. And although Odonkor hit the bar after the restart, Webó made it two for the visitors after intercepting a bad back pass to score.

Things went from bad to worse, Valdo heading a third and youngster Kike Sola coming on and helping himself to two more. And the game ended with angry fans invading the pitch and once again chanting for the club's owner Manuel Ruiz de Lopera to leave.

Betis ended the weekend just a point ahead of Celta, and they now need to win at Santander next weekend to be sure of staying up. Caretaker coach Paco Chaparro will be in charge for that game, and he needs to turn things around immediately if they are to do so.
