Once again Atlético Madrid missed out on a spot in the UEFA cup despite a 1-2 win at Osasuna, and they have to settle for a place in this summer's Intertoto cup. Javier Aguirre's side were dependent upon results from other grounds, and with Villarreal winning and Zaragoza (with whom they have a worse head-to-head record) drawing, they ended up in seventh position in the table.

It could have been all over early on though when Milosevic, playing his last game for the locals, fired a shot against the foot of the post. Miguel Flaño wasted another chance soon afterwards, but Fernando Torres brought a good save out of Elía before Agüero crossed in for Maxi to open the scoring with a spectacular volley from a tight angle.

Just a minute after the restart Osasuna levelled the scores, Milosevic beating Leo Franco from close up after Juanfran got past Antonio López and laid the ball across goal. But six minutes later Atlético were back in front, Monreal unfortunate to head the ball back over his own keeper trying to cut out a cross from Seitaridis. For a few minutes they were back in Europe, but a goal from Diego Milito at Recreativo ended their hopes. They can still get in through the back door of the Intertoto, but it was not exactly what they were hoping for at the start of the season.
