Real Sociedad are relegated to the second division for the first time in 40 years after a 3-3 draw at Valencia, who themselves were already assured of fourth spot before kick off. Lotina's side needed to win and hope for an improbable combination of events at other grounds to stay up, but Garitano gave them hope when he scrambled the ball under the legs of Butelle following a corner with only two minutes gone.

However just three minutes later David Villa picked up a pass from Silva inside the area and went past a couple of defenders before scoring the equaliser. Garitano hit the post and Díaz de Cerio went close, but a few minutes later the hosts took the lead when Víctor López deflected the ball past his own keeper after a corner was headed on.

Silva could have put the home side further in front when he chipped a shot just wide, but ten minutes before the break Real were level again when Kovacevic headed on Bravo's long clearance for Díaz de Cerio to shrug off his marker and fire an impressive shot into the roof of the net.

Butelle had to save from Savio after the restart, but results at other locations were going against the Basque side, and their bad fortune continued when Gerardo turned Villa's cross into his own net trying to stop it reaching Silva. A third own goal came in injury time when Moretti deflected Herrera's cross past Butelle, but by then the visiting fans were in tears, knowing that they will be travelling to lesser know places next season. Lotina had done his best, but it was a bridge too far.
