Valencia bounced back after their opening defeat against Villarreal, a 1-2 victory at Almería taking them up to mid-table. Their newly promoted opponents had pulled off the surprise of the first day though, and they had the better chances in the first half, with Corona hitting the bar and Cañizares the busiest man on the pitch.

However just a minute after the restart Morientes opened the scoring with a low shot, virtually the first his side had had on target throughout the match. Negredo headed an equaliser a few minutes later following a corner, and the striker fired a free kick just over the top a few minutes later.

Valencia proved to the home side how difficult it can be in the top flight though, Moretti getting the winner after Arizmendi headed on a free kick. And the Italian full back could have made it three had Cobeño not kept out his header a couple of minutes later. You have to take your chances when you can at this level.
