Atlético Madrid are up to sixth place after a 4-0 win over Racing Santander, the second time they have scored four goals in the Calderón stadium in four days. Raúl García took advantage of a bad clearance by Sergio Sánchez from a Reyes cross to open the scoring early on, but after that the only real chance came when Forlán failed to beat Toño close to half time.

Racing had hardly troubled Leo Franco, and with an hour on the clock Marcelino decided to make changes, bringing on Smolarek and Jordi and taking off Tchite and Colsa, the latter in order to prevent him picking up a second booking. But as fate would have it his replacement Jordi was shown two yellow cards in four minutes, leaving the Cantabrians with ten men for the rest of the game.

After that the locals took advantage, Agüero adding a second from a Reyes free kick, Forlán making it three from an Agüero assist, and Simao finally getting his goal count off the mark with a fourth. Javier Aguirre's side had won their first league match of the season, and on this form they can only go upwards.
