Racing Santander are in eighth spot after beating Getafe 2-0. Michael Laudrup's side were fresh from their triumph over Tottenham in the UEFA Cup, but only a couple of efforts from Manu and Uche caused any work for Toño in the first half, and Oscar Serrano put the Cantabrians ahead with a spectacular strike after picking up a return pass from Smolarek shortly before the break.

Earlier on Duscher and Smolarek had tested Pato, but Getafe did create a couple of chances at the start of the second half, Belenguer heading over and Cata Diaz having a goal disallowed for offside before another header hit Uche as it was going in. Jorge López brought a good save out of Pato again though, and with a quarter of an hour to go the veteran winger made it two when he headed a Minitis cross back over the keeper. Sousa went close with a header after that, but it was another defeat for the visitors, who stay in the drop zone as a result.
