Racing Santander are still going strong, and they held on to sixth spot, now two points clear of seventh placed Valencia, after beating Athletic Bilbao 1-0. It was definitely not Fernando Llorente's night, the young striker missing two simple chances early on and then deflecting Tchité's header past his own keeper close to half time. In between Smolarek had a goal ruled out for a borderline offside, and Racing lost Munitis with a hand injury after Amorebieta's clearance hit him at close range.

Toño was in action soon after the restart to keep out Amorebieta's header, but Tchité should have increased the lead, lobbing over the bar Aranzubia on the ground and then firing another effort straight at the keeper. Llorente failed completely to get on the end of and Aduríz cross, and Aduríz himself hit the post and then brought a good save out of Toño. Racing had clocked up another win though, and Athletic drop to within one place of the relegation spots.
