Atlético Madrid failed to take advantage of slips by the teams around them after they were beaten 1-2 by Athletic Bilbao in the last match on Sunday evening. Things looked good when Raúl García brought an early save out of Armando, and then Antonio López opened the scoring with a cross which bounced past everyone into the net, the ball possibly taking a slight deflection off Amorebieta. And a few minutes later Luis García curled a shot against the crossbar after a clever back-heel pass by Kun Agüero.

But an incredible run almost the length of the field by Javi Martínez set up Susaeta to equalise later in the first half, and Llorente put the Basque side in front with a deft flick from Yeste's free kick on the stroke of half time, referee Medina Cantalejo waving away claims for offside.

It was a sucker punch, and Atlético's challenge ended when Raúl García was sent off after picking up a second booking soon after the restart. Even so Diego Forlán fired into the side netting and Armando made the save of the night from Agüero's acrobatic over head kick, but Athletic could have increased their lead when Abbiati kept out a header from Aduríz. Atlético had faltered once again though, and their opponents came away with three valuable points which takes them way up the table to twelfth spot.
