Villarreal hold on to third place in the table even though they were held to a 0-0 draw by Racing Santander on Sunday evening. Despite the result it was a lively match, with several chances for either side. Rossi and Pires both brought saves out of Toño (back in the side after an injury), and Nihat, Gonzalo and Godín all went close for the locals. And Tchité and Ayoze also tried their luck at the other end as the visitors held their own before the break.

The locals should have taken the lead though when Rossi fired a penalty kick wide after Oscar Serrano fouled Cazorla early in the second half. Toño thwarted Cazorla and Rossi fired a good shot wide, and Garay headed against the bar for the Cantabrians. But Pellegrini's side could have won it in the last minute had referee Iturralde González not ruled out a strike by Rossi for the positional offside of a colleague.
