Getafe and Valencia also played out a 0-0 draw, a result which didn't help either side in their struggle to reach the European spots. The Ches had lost their only three previous visits to the Alfonso Pérez Coliseum, but they could have scored early on when Pato got a hand to turn Joaquín's wide shot onto the outside of the post. Both sides had penalty appeals turned down by referee Muñiz Fernández, the locals when shots from De la Red and Pablo Hernández both hit Caneira on the arm, and the visitors when David Villa was bundled over in the area.

Ten minutes in to the second half Valencia were left with ten men when Villa was shown a red card for hacking the De la Red from behind, and after that Koeman just about shut up shop. Pato was almost caught out though by a shot from Silva which ballooned off the head of a colleague, but Hildebrand had to be on his toes late on to keep out a couple of dangerous attacks. In the end though a dour goal-less draw between two coaches who were both members of Barcelona's famous dream team. Whatever would Johann Cruyff make of that?
