Atlético Madrid are still fourth despite a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Osasuna, albeit that they are now only two points clear of Sevilla and Espanyol. Javier Aguirre was hoping for a good result against his old club to help his side recover from the midweek UEFA Cup and a general drop in form which has seen them only win once since the midway point of the season. But with only five minutes on the clock the locals were two up, Carlos Vela setting up Kike Sola for the first and then getting the second himself with a shot under the legs of Abbiati after picking up a pass from Plasil.

Forlán got one back with a thunderous shot from outside of the area, but for the rest of the first half Atlético were pinned back, Abbiati having to be at his best to keep out Plasil and Sola, and Puñal and Javi García also going close. The visitors improved after the restart, Forlán having a penalty turned down and Jurado heading over. But with a quarter of an hour to go Héctor Font wrapped things up after good work from Sola down the right wing, ensuring three vital points which takes them further away from the drop zone.
