Athletic Bilbao moved four points clear of the drop zone after a 2-0 victory over direct relegation rivals Valladolid. Gabilondo got both the goals for the Basque side, the first a header from Llorente's cross in the fifth minute. Armando had to be on his toes though to keep out efforts from Jonathan Sesma and Manchev a few minutes later, and Sesma headed wide with the goal at his mercy later in the first half.

Asenjo did well though to keep out a header from Llorente shortly before the break, and the visitors were left with ten men when Pedro López was sent off for a foul on Aduriz soon after the restart. That was a bitter blow for Mendilibar's side, and Gabilondo got his second a few minutes later after Sergio Asenjo dropped a high cross at his feet. It was enough to give the Basque side three vital points, and they move two above their opponents in the table.
