Atlético Madrid consolidated fourth spot in the table with an important 1-2 victory at fifth placed Sevilla. Maxi put the visitors ahead with just over quarter of an hour gone, latching on to Simao's long cross after Agüero couldn't reach it and driving in a shot which took a slight deflection off Adriano. The locals came close to equalising when Abbiati dropped a cross at the feet of Luis Fabiano, but Pablo got back quick enough to block the striker's shot. Just three minutes after the restart though they were level, Diego Capel turning the ball back into the net after Abbiati could only push out Kanouté's shot.

Ten minutes later however Agüero restored the lead, getting ahead of two defenders to steer Antonio López's cross wide of Palop from close to goal. And the locals were left with ten men soon afterwards when substitute Maresca was sent off just eight minutes after making his appearance for head-butting Agüero. After that the game got physical, with Pablo and Camacho getting kicks in the face as the locals battled for every ball. Atlético had won in the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium for the first time in fifteen years though, and they move five points clear of their opponents in the table.
