Mallorca beat Deportivo 1-0 in the first match on Saturday evening to move up safely to mid-table. Both sides started the game level on points, just two above the drop zone, but the locals won it thanks to an Arango free kick midway through the first half which bounced past everyone into the net.

The locals were on top for the rest of the first half, Güiza going close, Borja Valero bringing a good save out of Aouate and Varela shooting over with Güiza better placed. But after the restart Lotina's side regrouped, Lopo having a penalty appeal turned down, Sergio a shot saved by Moyà and Wilhelmsson also trying his luck.

Arango had another effort saved by Aouate and Güiza wasted two or three more chances, in particular a header wide of an empty net in the last minute after Jonás had drawn the keeper away from goal. Filipe and his replacement Riki went close at the other end, but with a few minutes to go Riki was sent off after being shown a rigorous second yellow card by the referee.
