Villarreal and Barcelona were left with a chance to close the gap on Real Madrid after the leaders drew 1-1 at Mallorca on Saturday night. Bernd Schuster's side were under pressure early on, with Casillas having to save from Jonás and Güiza shooting wide. And they were helped by referee Daudén Ibáñez when he disallowed a goal by Fernando Navarro, and then waved away appeals for a penalty after a cross hit Cannavaro on the arm.

Let off the hook, Madrid took the lead when Sneijder beat Moyà after a good run by Robben shortly before the break, but Sergio Ramos got himself sent off for a second bookable offence midway through the second half, and soon afterwards ex Real Madrid Castilla substitute Borja Valero equalised for the locals. Soon afterwards Güiza had a chance to win the game when he got free in front of Casillas, only for him to hit the bar.
