Espanyol drop three points off the European spots after they lost 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao, their third defeat in a row. Garmendia headed the only goal of the game from Gabilondo's cross on the quarter hour mark, although Javi Martínez and Susaeta could have extended the lead if they could have converted chances before the break.

Rufete hit the post though at the other end, and Iraola recovered from a slip to get back and turn another shot from Riera against the upright soon after the restart. Armando saved from Tamudo and Riera, and after Amorebieta had been let off a penalty for hands, referee Paradas Romero did point to the spot after Susaeta bundled over Tamudo. The striker fired his kick over the bar though, handing the victory to the Basque side who are now only two points behind their opponents in the table.
