Fifth placed Racing Santander have been closing in on the Champions League spots recently, although they ended the weekend three points behind Atlético Madrid after they were beaten 1-3 by a Deportivo side who have now picked up 16 points from their last seven games.

Xisco gave the Galicians a second minute lead with an individualist goal, pulling the ball round Oriol before drilling a low shot past Toño. And Coloccini made it two midway through the first half, shooting across the keeper after Pablo Amo had headed the ball back across the area.

Jorge López got one back with a well struck free kick later in the first half, but Xisco got his second of the night and his fifth in eight days after Lafita set him up shortly before the interval. After the restart Aouate saved from Colsa and Filipe cleared another effort by Smolarek off the line with the keeper beaten, but Depor's defence resisted any further attack to clock up three more important points.
