Valencia are in free fall after a 1-0 defeat at struggling Murcia, and after only one win in eight (albeit against Real Madrid) they are now in fourteenth spot, just six points above the drop zone. Neither side came close to scoring until Pignol brought a save out of Hildebrand on the half hour mark, but five minutes later Iván Alonso headed what was to prove the winner from Abel's long free kick.

Youngster Dani Aquino could have scored a second when he headed a De Lucas cross against the bar on the stroke of half time, but Carini had to make a good save from Morientes, and substitute Zigic hit the bar with the goal at his mercy after the restart. Iván alonso went close later on, but Javier Clemente's side had already done enough to take the three points. Results elsewhere though means they are still seven points away from safety.
