Real Madrid are league champions! Bernd Schuster's side put in a valiant performance to beat Osasuna 1-2 and take the title for the second season running. Villarreal's victory earlier in the evening meant they needed to win to be sure of outdistancing their closest rivals. But things looked bad when Cannavaro was sent off early in the second half for a second bookable offence, and then Puñal converted a penalty after Heinze handled in the area with seven minutes to go.

Before that Madrid's only real chances were a shot from Diarra which Ricardo tipped over the bar before the break, and a lob from Sneijder which ballooned on to the crossbar. But the goal brought them to their senses, and Robben headed the equaliser from Higuaín's free kick just a couple of minutes later. And two minutes after that Higuaín controlled Sergio Ramos's pass and blasted a shot past Ricardo to win the match. A 31st league title for the Merengues, and they can now celebrate when Barcelona visit the Bernabeu stadium next Wednesday.
