Racing Santander held on to sixth spot after they drew 0-0 at Athletic Bilbao, and they now need to beat Osasuna in their last match to ensure a historic place in the UEFA Cup. With a lot at stake it was a gritty match with few chances for either team. Armando tipped a Jorge López free kick over the top early on, and Llorente and Susaeta both failed to find the target at the other end a few minutes later.

The locals felt they should have had a penalty when César Navas brought down Llorente shortly before half time, but referee Velasco Carballo turned down their appeals. After that though there were even less chances, the Cantabrians happy to hold on to a draw until news came through that Mallorca had won in the last minute at the Nou Camp.

By then though it was too late to change their plans, but in any case they stay a point ahead of the Balearic Islanders going in to the last weekend. Athletic themselves still have something to play for on the last day as well as they have a chance of overhauling Deportivo for the Intertoto spot. As they say at the opera, it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings!
