Valencia ended the season in tenth spot after a 3-1 win over Atlético Madrid in the last match of the season. With nothing to play for, both sides gave a run out to several reserve players, Aguirre in particular making eight changes and Voro drafting in Cañizares for his last game with the club. With ten minutes gone Seitaridis put through his own net, and Mata missed a couple of chances to increase the lead later in the first half before forcing Abbiati into a save which allowed David Villa to turn the rebound back in to the net.

Abbiati was forced to keep out Villa and Joaquín again before the break, and Aguirre decided to turn to Kun Agüero at half time. The new man immediately brought a good save out of Cañizares, playing his last game at Mestalla before moving on, but soon afterwards Villa ran on to Joaquín's long ball to score his second of the night. Agüero got one back for the visitors, but Valencia could have got another late on, Zé Castro clearing off the line in one attack and Abbiati saving again from Mata. Atlético weren't too bothered though, they had already tied up a place in the Champions League a week ago.
