Second Division A - Day 16

Málaga stay top of the table, at least for the next 24 hours, after drawing 1-1 at Gimnàstic on Saturday evening. The Catalans dominated the first half, with Pinilla, Abel and Tortolero going close. Miku wasted a couple of chances after the restart, but with a quarter of an hour to go substitute Salva put the visitors in front when he headed Rossato's cross over Roberto. The Andalusians appeared to be heading for a victory, but a late volley from Oscar Arpón which took a deflection off a defender saved a point for the home side.

Meanwhile Elche moved up to fourth pending Sunday's games after beating Castellón 1-0. Perico hit the post for the visitors before Raúl Martín got what was to be the only goal, looping a shot over Carlos Sánchez after Iago set him up. Bellvis hit the post at the other end though after the break, and although Oberman was sent off for a foul on Iago, Aurelio almost saved a point for the East coast side in the last minute.

Granada 74 are fifth after a 1-3 win at Racing Ferrol, their fourth victory in a row. Medina opened the scoring for the locals in the eleventh minute after connecting with a cross from Pereira, but Luque equalised four minutes after the restart. That started the downfall, and after Chema Mato was sent off for a second bookable offence midway through the second half, Aranda converted a penalty a couple of minutes later after he was bought down by keeper Queco Piña to put the visitors ahead. And Luque rounded things off on a late breakaway to leave the Galicians on the brink of the drop zone.

Albacete sank further down in the relegation spots after losing 0-3 to Alavés, who move five points clear of the bottom four as a result. Keepers Jonathan and Bernardo both pulled off good saves in the first half, but with twenty minutes to go Jonathan had to leave the pitch with an injury. His replacement Javi Martínez was caught off his line by a long shot from Sergio two minutes later, and Pablo Casar took advantage of a mistake by Baggio to make it two. And with the game in injury time Aganzo charged down a clearance from the young keeper, the ball bouncing back into the net off the striker.

Bottom club Las Palmas are now level on points with Albacete after a last minute 1-0 win over Eibar. Nauzet went close a couple of times early on and Insa replied for the Basque side, hitting the post with an inswinging corner. But otherwise there was little to entertain the crowd, and a draw seemed on the cards until Adrian beat Cuéllar in the ninetieth minute after Fukuda's header came back off the post. (08.12.07)

Sporting Gijón stay third despite losing 0-1 to Tenerife on Sunday lunchtime. The Asturians started without their two injured front men, Barral and Kike Mateo, but after a dull first half Preciado was forced to bring on Barral, who hit the post soon after making his appearance. A couple of minutes later though Pablo Sicilia got on the end of Nino's dead ball kick to beat Roberto, and although Michel and Pina went close later on they were unable Juan Pablo.

Numancia moved above Málaga to the top of the table after a 1-0 win over local rivals Salamanca on Sunday evening. The Soria based side dominated the first half, with Palacios testing Pagola and Jordà putting an easy chance over the top before Del Pino latched on to an assist from Julio Alvarez to shoot over the keeper midway through the first half. And it could have been more had Del Pino not missed another chance before the break, and had Alvarez not shot against the bar in a good team move after the restart.

Celta are now just two points behind Málaga in fifth spot after coming from a goal down with ten men to beat Sevilla Atlético 2-1. The Galicians had Diego Costa sent off for a second bookable offence with only eighteen minutes on the clock, and Armentanos caught out Pinto with a long free kick shortly before the interval. But Quincy shot just wide and Canobbio brought a good save out of Javi Varas as the locals pushed for an equaliser. And substitute Jesús Perera came on to turn things around, beating the keeper after he could only push out a shot from Guayre and then setting up Quincy for the winner with two minutes to go.

The three other games in the second division all ended without goals. Herculés were unable to do more than draw 0-0 at Poli Ejido, despite missing two penalties and playing against nine men for much of the game. Bernaus was the first to go when he gave away the first penalty ten minutes before the break, but Blas Pérez put the spot kick wide. And Castells followed midway through the second half after conceding the second penalty, but this time Alvaro Iglesias saved from Tote.

The match between Real Sociedad and Cádiz also ended 0-0. The early chances fell to the home side, Aranburu and Carlos Martínez going close, but Riesgo had to be at his best to keep out Lobos and Nano shot just over the bar shortly before the break. Lobos hesitated too long when free after the restart, and Delibasic hit the post at the other end. But a heavy rainstorm made play difficult after that, and both sides settled for a point.

Xerez and Córdoba also shared the honours after their local derby ended 0-0. Javi Moreno wasted a good chance to put the visitors ahead midway through the first half, but a few minutes later they were left with ten men when Ito picked up a second yellow card. After that Valle did well to keep out Yordi and Calvo, but the visitors did have their chances as well, Porató making a double save from Juanlu and Asen late on, (09.12.07).
