A disappointing start for Athletic Bilbao, who were beaten 1-3 by Almería. The visitors raced in to a three goal lead with just over half the game gone, Pellerano starting things off from close up after Chico headed on Corona's corner. Negredo put them two up before the break, picking up a wayward pass backwards by Casas to run on and chip the ball over Iraizoz, and Juanma Ortíz volleyed home the third just five minutes after the restart.

The unhappy San Mamés crowd started to get on the back of the players, but they eventually got one back after half time substitute Ion Vélez ran on to Susaeta's through ball to turn a shot past Diego Alves. And they would have scored a second had the Brazilian Olympic keeper not saved a Yeste penalty after Bruno cut out Llorente's cross with his arm. Not a good omen though for Joaquín Caparrós's side, and on this showing they could be struggling once again.
