Atlético Madrid top the table after the first round of matches of the newly named Liga BBVA, a 4-0 victory over Málaga rounding off a great week for the club. An enthusiastic crowd turned up after their Champions League victory over Schalke '04 midweek, and once again they were treated to a goal feast. Simao tested Arnau with an early free kick, and midway through the first half Heitinga deflected a shot from Ujfalusi past Arnau following a corner to start things off.

Diego Forlán hit the post before scoring his side's second, picking up a deflected pass from Agüero before driving a low shot under the keeper. And before the half time whistle Forlán had his second of the night, the Uruguayan striker converting a penalty after Weligton was adjudged to have pushed Heitinga in the area.

Aguirre rested his two strikers early in the second half but the pressure continued, Maxi fluffing a chance before the two García's combined to set up fellow substitute Sinama-Pongolle for a fourth. Málaga's only really effort was a dangerous free kick which Duda curled wide, and only a couple of saves by Arnau from Luis García and Maniche prevented a bigger scoreline. Atlético were back on top, and on this form they could stay there for some time.
