Disappointment for Sporting Gijón in their return to the top flight after ten years in the wilderness, a late goal from Getafe leaving them without a point on the opening weekend. The Asturians started well in front of a packed Molinón stadium, Diego Castro almost intercepting a sloppy back pass and Abbondanzieri saving from a Jorge header. But a gap in the defensive wall allowed an Albín free kick to beat Sergio Sánchez on the quarter hour mark, and they were behind.

Barral almost equalised a few minutes later though when his half-hit shot was cleared off the line by Mario, and Diego Castro did level the scores later in the first half, latching on to a loose ball to curl a shot past the keeper. The visitors came back though, Sánchez keeping out a Manu header and an effort from Guerrón either side of half time. And just when it looked as if a draw was on the cards, Casquero latched on to a failed clearance to drive a shot past the keeper and win the match. Life in the first division is not that easy!
