Goals:
1-0. 27. Cazorla. Picked up Ibagaza pass, turned past Tomás and beat keeper.

Villarreal picked up their first win of the season, a strike from Cazorla midway through the first half enough to give them a 1-0 victory over Deportivo.

As with many sides this weekend, the line ups were affected by the "FIFA virus", in particular South American players Godín, Eguren and Guardado not making the starting line ups after long trips for international commitments (Godín was in any case suspended).

The first chance fell to the visitors when Diego López had to save a header from Juan Rodríguez, but a few minutes later Cazorla picked up the ball in midfield and caught out Aranzubia with a long shot.

Guille Franco and Cazorla came close to extending the lead when they had efforts blocked by the defence either side of half time, and Arizmendi almost fumbled a shot from half time substitute Altidore in to his own net.

But in the end Depor almost saved a draw when Sergio danced through the defence and fired a shot against the foot of the post. All the points though stayed at home, and both sides now have to regroup and prepare for their midweek European fixtures.
