Athletic Bilbao climbed away from the danger zone after a 2-0 victory over Valladolid on Sunday evening. As in most games today, the goals came after the break, Llorente heading a cross from Mikel Balenziaga past Sergio Asenjo to open the scoring in the fiftieth minute. Iraola added the second from the penalty spot after the ball hit Javier Baraja on the arm, but only at the second attempt after referee Rubinos Pérez ordered a retake.

Athletic had had the better of the first half, with Llorente and Susaeta going close and Asenjo having to save from David López and Ion Vélez. Valladolid's only reply was an effort over the top from Vivar Dorado. The visitors hardly reacted after the Basque side scored, and Llorente could have added to the lead near the end. Job done though, and Caparrós can rest a little easier tonight.
