Sevilla moved up to fourth with a 0-1 victory at Atlético Madrid, revenge in part for the double defeat last season which cost the Andalusians a place in the Champions League. With several players injured, Aguirre drafted in Banega and included Kun Agüero in his line up, even though he was carrying a knock. The first chance fell to Agüero though in the third minute following a corner, the striker just failing to steer his header on target. Luis Fabiano had a goal disallowed for offside a few minutes later, but soon afterwards the Brazilian forward opened the scoring with a well struck free kick past Coupet.
There was only a timid reaction from Atlético, and Luis Fabiano could well have extended the lead when he headed a Navas cross against the bar after the interval. Aguirre had used up two of his substitutions to replace the injured Seitaridis with Pablo, and then Pablo himself with Pernía after the defender picked up an injury just four minutes later. His third replacement Miguel did test Palop soon after coming on, but otherwise the visitors were on top, Capel just failing to hit the net from a wide angle after Coupet gifted him the ball, and Adriano bursting through only to shoot over the top. Sevilla though took the three points and they move above their opponents to fourth in the table.
