Deportivo moved up to seventh in the table after beating Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in the last game of the weekend. Ze Castro gave the Galicians the lead in the twentieth minute, turning the ball in from close up after Iraizoz could only push out Verdú's free kick. The visitors should have equalised soon afterwards when Ze Castro fouled Llorente in the area, but ex Athletic keeper Aranzubia saved Iraola's penalty, an element of revenge against Caparrós after the coach forced him out of San Mamés.

Shortly before half time Guardado had a couple of chances to increase the lead, but both times he came up against Iraizoz. Two minutes before the break though Depor were awarded a penalty themselves after Amorebieta took out Bodipo, and Verdú stepped up to convert the kick.

Verdú felt himself unlucky not to have a second penalty when he was felled by Iraizoz soon after the restart. Athletic got back in the game though when Javi Martínez headed Iraola's cross past Aranzubia, and Llorente almost equalised when his shot hit his own man as it was heading for goal. But with the game already in the fourth minute of injury time Guardado wrapped things up with a third goal, leaving the Basque side further down in the drop zone.
