Atlético Madrid moved up to fifth pending Sevilla's game on Sunday after hammering Sporting Gijón 2-5. Bilic headed the Asturians in to the lead in the fourth minute, but Agüero equalised almost immediately with an overhead kick. Forlán had a goal disallowed and Maxi and Seitaridis went close, and with four minutes to go to the break Agüero put his side ahead after ex Atlético keeper Cuéllar spilled a long shot from Forlán.

The rain started to fall as Simao brought a good save out of the local keeper, and Forlán took advantage of a hesitant defence to run through and score his team's third. Barral got another one back with a shot from the edge of the area just three minutes later, but Atleti dominated after that, Maniche and Simao shooting just wide and Forlán and Agüero testing Cuéllar again.

Soon afterwards Maxi put the game beyond Sporting's reach after a quick passing move involving Paulo Assunçao and Agüero, and Forlán rounded things off near the end, beating the offside trap to pick up Raúl García's through ball and shoot wide of the keeper again. A great result for Aguirre's side against a difficult opponent, and they are now only two points off the Champions League spots.
