Athletic Bilbao climbed away from the danger zone after a 3-0 win over Sporting Gijón. Llorente opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the fifth minute after he was pushed over by Iván Hernández, and Iraola scrambled home a second midway through the first half after Ion Vélez headed across. And when David López beat Cuéllar for a third time a few minutes later the match was as good as over.
Before half time David López had another effort deflected for a corner, and then fired in a free kick which Llorente just failed to turn in. Sporting's first real effort didn't come until shortly before the break when Barral's shot was blocked by Aitor Ocio, but after the restart they disappeared from view, and Iraola could have added to the lead had Cuéllar not turned his shot for a corner.
With the game in time added on the visiting keeper and Gurpegui clashed going for a high ball and both were stretched off, the former with a broken ankle and the latter with a broken nose. Preciado had made all three changes and an outfield player was preparing to put on the keeper's jersey, but Pérez Burrull decided that the result wasn't going to change, and called it a day.
